Hundreds of students and academics were rounded up in Iran following the contested presidential elections in June 2009. According to the International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran, at least 87 students and 9 professors remain in jail. Apart from Kian Tajbakhsh, those who remain in jail include Bijan Khajehpour-Khoei, an economic consultant who chairs the Board of Trustees of the Science and Arts Foundation in Iran, and who wrote for the Summer 2000 issue of Social Research, disappeared on June 27, 2009 and his whereabouts are currently unknown, although the L.A. Times has reported that he appeared at a “show-trial” on August 8th. Meanwhile arrests are continuing. Amnesty International reports that on September 2, Dr Mohammad Maleki, a 76-year old Iranian scholar and former Chancellor of Tehran University was arrested from his home and taken to Evin prison. An independent commentator, Dr. Malecki is believed to be held for criticizing the conduct of the election, although like Kian he did not vote or participate in the subsequent protests.
